Manchester United sign Jonny Evans

Manchester United have officially announced the signing of center-back Jonny Evans, who has been training with the team since his departure from Leicester City this summer.

The 35-year-old, who initially signed a short-term deal with his former club for pre-season after his contract at Leicester expired, has now put pen to paper on a one-year deal with United.

“I’ve really enjoyed working under the manager and his coaching staff since the start of pre-season, and I’m looking forward to helping this group achieve success together at this fantastic football club,” remarked Evans.

A product of Manchester United’s academy, the Northern Irish defender made 198 first-team appearances for the club before departing for West Bromwich Albion in 2015.

During his first spell at Old Trafford, Evans secured three Premier League titles, two League Cups, and the Champions League. He has also earned 102 caps for his country.

“I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home. This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad,” added the center-back.

Erik ten Hag, starting his second season as Manchester United manager, has been impressed by the United academy graduate, leading to the decision to retain him at the club at least until June 2024.

“Jonny is a winner who has experienced everything in the game. His attitude and work ethic are second to none, and Erik and the coaching staff know he’s someone they can rely on whenever needed this season,” stated John Murtough, Manchester United Football Director.

With first-choice center-back Raphael Varane sidelined for weeks, Evans is expected to provide additional defensive cover for the Red Devils.

Other defenders set to partner Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the United defense include former captain Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.
