NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua who had traveled to Kampala to represent Kizza Besigye, has expressed frustration over the intensive searches she endured while attending a Court Martial hearing in Uganda.
The prominent Ugandan opposition leader, was arrested in November on allegations of possessing illegal ammunition.
Speaking to the press on Monday, December 2, Karua detailed the challenges she faced while trying to access the courtroom.
She described the security measures as excessive and invasive, noting that she was subjected to multiple searches at various checkpoints before being allowed entry.
“I express my dismay at the humiliating mode of search that I was subjected to twice and all the members of the court procession were subjected to. First at the gate, then as we entered the courtroom,” Karua stated.
The veteran politician and lawyer explained that the heightened security measures were not just routine.
Instead, the security searches seemed specifically targeted, raising questions about Uganda’s commitment to upholding the principles of fair trial and human dignity.
Karua praised Besigye’s tenacity during her statement, saying the lawmaker told them to apply for an adjournment in order to get a license.
“We have been able to have an audience with our client in the court and the client was very firm that we ought to apply for adjournment so that we can get the response from the Law Council,” Karua stated.
The court ordered Besigye and his accomplice, Abied Lutaale, to be held for seven days until December 10, 2024, after receiving an appeal for adjournment.
