Mashemeji Derby: Gor Mahia pound AFC Leopards again

Record Kenyan league champions Gor Mahia have for the umpteenth time reigned supreme over their archrivals AFC Leopards, beating them 2-0 in a Mashemeji Derby played at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla was on target in both halves to decide the match that now casts doubt on AFC Leopards’ ability this season and further puts at risk head coach Tom Juma’s job.

The high-stake derby that was broadcast by Tanzanian media giant Azam TV pulled a crowd of football enthusiasts among them opposition chief Raila Odinga.

“Party Leader Raila Odinga has this evening given a cash donation of Ksh. 500,000 each to AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia after an entertaining match played at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani,” his party, ODM, confirmed in a statement.

After the match, K’Ogalo took to social media to throw a jibe at AFC Leopards. This was to confirm their head coach Johnathan McKinstry‘s remarks that they had a 90% chance of winning the derby.

“There it is. And we had warned you guys. KWS can now take their property, we are done with our job,” Gor Mahia aimed a dig at AFC Leopards in a post on social media implying that they had ‘killed the Leopard’.

Ingwe are yet to win a game so far six matches into the 2023/24 season. They have drawn four and lost two.

Out of the possible 18 points, they have only managed a paltry four, a return that has seen the fanbase call for the sacking of Juma without success.

It is worth noting that AFC Leopards last won the league title in 1998 and chances of ending the drought this season are fading away, rapidly.
