Matatu fares increase by 40% after hike in fuel prices

Matatus in Nairobi have announced there will be an increase in fare following the recent fuel prices review.

Energy and Petroleum Authority (EPRA) released new fuel prices on Thursday evening which take effect until October 15.

In Nairobi, the price of Super Petrol increased by KSh16.96 to retail at KSh211.64, while that of diesel rose by KSh21.32 to sell at KSh200.99.

The price of kerosene increased by KSh33.13 to sell at KSh202.61.

Matatu Owners Association

Consequently, commuters in Nairobi will have to bear with a 40-50 percent hike in bus fares, the Matatu Owners Association said.

Additionally, peak hours will be lengthened to maximize the income for matatus to grapple with the high cost of fuel and make a profit.

“For instance, a matatu that initially charged Ksh100 during peak hours will now charge between Ksh120 or Ksh150. We will also extend the peak hours which previously lasted from 6:00 am to 8:00 am, and will run up to 10:00 am,” Brendan Marshall, a senior official of MOA was quoted as saying.

Furthermore, evening peak hours will begin earlier at 4 pm until 7 pm. There will also be no significant change in bus fares from 7 pm onwards.

During off-peak hours, commuters will also feel the effect of the matatu fare increment. For instance, if one paid KSh50 previously, they will now have to part with KSh70.

Tough Times Ahead

Cabinet Secretary for Trade and Industrialisation Moses Kuria blamed the recent increase in fuel prices on worldwide crude prices.

“Global crude prices are on an upward trajectory,” wrote Kuria on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

He advised Kenyans to plan for tough times ahead further revealing that the prices will increase by KSh 10 monthly till February.

“For planning purposes expect prices to go up by KSh 10 every month till February.”

This comes against the backdrop of newly proposed taxes including; V.A.T, NHIF reforms among others.
