From dusty neighborhood pitches to the bright lights of Kenya’s Premier League, Maxwell Odada’s story is one of sheer grit, resilience, and passion.
He didn’t just dream of playing professional football—he fought for it, endured setbacks, and proved that with determination and hard work, nothing is impossible.
A football dream that almost never was
Growing up , Odada didn’t always see football as a career. In a family where athletics took center stage, football was just a fun escape. But fate had other plans.
Everything changed when he joined a local football academy. It was there that his raw talent stood out, catching the attention of Kakamega High School, a breeding ground for Kenya’s top footballers.
This was the moment his casual passion turned into an unstoppable drive.
Breaking Through at Kakamega High
At Kakamega High, Odada had to prove himself from day one. The school’s legendary football team, Green Commandos was packed with talent.
Despite his age, his fearless dribbling, quick decision-making, and hunger to improve earned him a spot on the first team while still in Form 1.
“That was the moment I knew football could be my future,” he recalls.
The Green Commandos gave him exposure, confidence, and a winning mentality—qualities that would define his career.
From High School Star to National Recognition
His performances didn’t go unnoticed. National team scouts took interest, and suddenly, the boy who once saw football as a hobby realized he was playing for something much bigger.
While many young players struggle to balance education and sports, Odada was determined to succeed in both.
“I wanted my parents to see that football wasn’t a distraction—it was a path,” he says.
With a high school certificate in hand and a growing reputation, Odada was ready for the next level.
The Hard Road to the Top
After high school, he stayed with Green Commandos for six months before moving to other clubs. The transition wasn’t easy.
The reality of professional football hit hard—long training sessions, inconsistent pay, and moments of doubt.
“There were no allowances, sometimes no salary. But we played because we loved the game.”
Some players quit. Others gave up on their dreams, but Odada refused to let hardship define his destiny.
The Big Break: Joining Nairobi City Stars
Odada’s resilience paid off when he signed for Murang’a Seals, marking his entry into Kenya’s Premier League. But his real breakthrough came when he joined Nairobi City Stars.
“City Stars had a strong reputation, and I knew this was where I had to be,” he says.
This wasn’t just another club—it was a team known for developing players and opening doors to bigger opportunities.
With his skillset, hunger, and never-give-up attitude, Odada was ready to shine.
Fighting Battles Off the Pitch: The Financial Struggles
For many African footballers, the biggest challenge isn’t always on the field—it’s survival off it.
At certain clubs, months would go by without a paycheck. Bills piled up. Responsibilities grew. And the pressure to provide for his family weighed heavy on his shoulders.
“It’s tough when your parents rely on you, but you’re struggling to make ends meet,” he admits.
Despite these hardships, he never stopped believing. Every time he stepped onto the field, he gave everything—because quitting was never an option.
Mental Strength: The Weapon That Saved His Career
One of the toughest tests of Odada’s career came at Wazito FC, where the club was battling relegation.
For 14 games, it was a war for survival.
“We had to fight for every single point. Every game felt like a final,” he remembers.
Through mental toughness, relentless work ethic, and leadership, Odada played a crucial role in helping the team avoid relegation.
This experience cemented an important lesson:
Football isn’t just about talent—it’s about mental strength, discipline, and the ability to rise in difficult moments.
The Power of Mindset: Success is More Than Just Skill
Odada firmly believes that talent alone isn’t enough—it’s the mentality that separates great players from the rest.
“Every game is an opportunity to express yourself. But without discipline, that talent means nothing.”
When given freedom on the pitch, he plays with intelligence, purpose, and a strong tactical mindset—a skill that has made him a key player in his team’s strategy.
Inspiration from Football Icons
Every great player studies the best, and for Odada, inspiration comes from stars like Elanga (Nottingham Forest) and Xavi Simons.
“Elanga’s energy, movement, and work rate inspire me. I follow his every move,” he shares.
Similarly, he admires Simons for his dribbling ability and speed—qualities that reflect his own strengths.
“When I watch Simons, I see a lot of myself in him.”
Looking Ahead: A Future of Determination
With his career at Nairobi City Stars, Odada remains focused on growth and new challenges.
“I’ve come this far with hard work and persistence, and I know I can go even further,” he says confidently.
His story is a reminder that success in football is built on determination, mental strength, and unwavering commitment.

Maxwell Odada’s journey is more than just a football story.
It’s a lesson in resilience, a testament to fighting for your dreams, and proof that no obstacle is too big.
