Mbagathi Hospital restores sight to blind woman in life-changing surgery

After two years of darkness, a Nairobi woman has regained her sight thanks to a successful cataract surgery at Mbagathi Referral Hospital.

Rhoda Njeri Wanjiru, who had been blind in both eyes due to dense cataracts, had sought treatment at multiple hospitals without success. Confirming the news, Mbagathi CEO Dr. Alexander Irungu stated:

“Her breakthrough came on February 4, 2025, when she arrived at the Mbagathi Eye Unit for assessment. After a thorough examination, doctors confirmed the presence of bilateral dense cataracts, a leading cause of reversible blindness.”

The following day, February 5, she underwent cataract surgery on her right eye. The procedure was successful, and by the next morning, Njeri experienced a moment she had long dreamed of—seeing her son and the medical team who helped restore her vision.

Overwhelmed with joy, Njeri expressed her gratitude to the hospital staff and pledged to adhere to her post-surgery medication to ensure a full recovery and prepare for her left-eye surgery.

“I am very happy I can now see. I had lost hope, but I thank God for directing me to Mbagathi Hospital. I have recovered,” she said.

As Rhoda Njeri Wanjiru prepares for her second surgery, her story stands as a testament to the life-changing impact of timely and effective medical intervention.
