Mbagathi Hospital sets new standard with advanced Wastewater Treatment System

Mbagathi Hospital has taken a significant step in environmental sustainability by installing the first-ever advanced wastewater treatment system, setting a new benchmark for public health facilities in Kenya.

The hospital’s leadership, along with Deputy Director of Environmental Health, program heads, and sub-county public health officers, visited the hospital’s laboratory department to witness the groundbreaking development. This milestone was achieved through the leadership of Chief Officer for Public Health, Tom Nyakaba, whose commitment to improving health facility standards has made this project a reality.

Hospital CEO Dr. Irungu has also played a key role in ensuring Mbagathi Hospital remains a center of excellence. Under his leadership, the facility continues to invest in cutting-edge healthcare solutions that not only improve patient care but also promote environmental conservation.

The newly installed system, known as ECOKlien, is a Hybrid Advanced Waste Treatment solution that incorporates electro-coagulation and electro-oxidation cells to treat hospital wastewater. This state-of-the-art system is designed as a “once-through process”, meaning it does not require the addition of chemicals or polymers. Its robust design makes it ideal for remote locations and is equipped with SCADA monitoring systems for real-time operation.

The ECOKlien system is fully automatic and skid-mounted, designed for continuous operation, converting effluent into reusable water. It is particularly recommended for pre-treating biomedical wastewater from key hospital departments, including the laboratory, maternity, theatre, pharmacy, oncology center, and mortuary, before discharge into the public sewer system.

This revolutionary move not only ensures compliance with environmental regulations but also enhances water conservation efforts by making treated wastewater suitable for reuse. Mbagathi Hospital’s initiative is expected to set a precedent for other healthcare institutions across the country, emphasizing the importance of sustainable waste management in medical facilities.

With this new system in place, Mbagathi Hospital reaffirms its commitment to providing top-quality healthcare while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
