Award-winning comedian Jasper Muthomi, popularly known as MC Jessy, is developing a multi-million auditorium that will be able to accommodate over 10,000 guests.
In an interview with Alex Mwakideu and Emmanuel Mwashumbe on ‘Breakfast47,’ MC Jessy said the development of the auditorium situated along Kiambu Road is making significant progress and will be inaugurated in June 2025.
“We are setting up an auditorium that can accommodate 10,000 people. It can, however, be reconfigured quickly to accommodate 5,000 or 3,000 people,” said MC Jessy.
MC Jessy disclosed that it is being developed with support from foreign investors as a nod to trailblazer Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki for his contributions to the development of stand-up comedy in Kenya.
“Kuna investors nyuma yake lakini itakuwa ikiongozwa hapa [Kenya] nami… Tuna structure comedy isonge mbele. Brand mpya ya MC Jessy. Sasa ni ku grow. Ni kuwapa wengine nafasi ya kufika sehemu sisi wengine tumefika. Ni ukweli tumebobea kwenye ulingo wa ucheshi, lakini lazima tuinuane. Churchill ashatuinua, miaka yake pia inasonga, sisi pia tuinue wengine,” he explained.
He pointed out that the project will include a state-of-the-art studio modelled after “The Daily Show” and aims to provide comics with a venue to showcase their skills away from the less desirable environments of clubs and restaurants.
“Pale ndio tutafanya uzinduzi wa the new studios za comedy. Hatutakuwa tunaenda kufanya comedy kwa clubs anymore… It is a permanent set, not a club or a restaurant ya mtu… Pale, tutafungulia watu wengi njia ya kufanya comedy. Tunataka kufanya international,” said MC Jessy.
The “Jessy Junction” host highlighted that the auditorium will also offer a new outlook on the industry, positioning Kenyan comedy for recognition on the international platform.
“Kama ulishwahi ona “The Daily Show” na nyinginezo, zinakuja sasa. Tutakuwa na audience na mambo mazuri. Ni studio za mtu ambazo tunaenda kuzindua 2025… Ile studio na show ambayo tutaleta itakuwa in international standards na tutakuwa tunaziweka kwenye TV na mtandaoni,” he added.
Moreover, MC Jessy announced that his One Mic show, planned for December 11, 2024, at SkateCity, nestled atop Diamond Plaza, Nairobi, serves as a representation of what the auditorium will provide.
He indicated that his decision to host the one-man show was influenced by his supporters, including Afro-pop star Bien-Aimé Baraza.
“Bien alini challenge tukifanya interview kwenye “Jessy Junction” akaniambia, “mbona hufanyi one man show?” Alikuwa mmoja wa wale mafans wangu ambao walikuwa wananiambia, ‘MC Jessy tupe’… Kabla ya June, Mungu akiwezesha, tutafanya the unveiling and hold stand up comedy in a bid to support wasanii wanaotaka kufanya mambo kama haya,” he noted.
According to the comedian, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, comedian turned politician Felix ‘Jalang’o’ Odiwuor, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kasarani’s Ronald Karauri, among others, will grace the event.
