MCA Robert Alai demands crackdown on unsafe Nairobi construction site after tragic death

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has urged authorities to audit construction sites in Nairobi. His call follows a tragic accident in Westlands that left one worker dead.

Five others sustained injuries, with two in critical condition at a Nairobi hospital. Three are nursing minor injuries after the incident.

Rising cases of construction site fatalities

This marks the fifth reported fatal construction accident in Westlands and Dagoretti North within two months. Alai blames poor safety measures for these incidents.

According to him, many cases of injuries and deaths go unreported. He claims that authorities and police often conceal such incidents from public scrutiny.

Non-Compliance with safety regulations

Alai has accused construction firms of ignoring safety regulations.

He pointed out that most sites fail to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 2007.

This law requires employers to ensure worker safety. However, most contractors allegedly disregard safety measures, leaving employees exposed to dangerous working conditions.

Additionally, Alai criticized violations of the National Construction Authority (NCA) Regulations, 2014.

Specifically, he highlighted Regulation 25, which mandates the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Many sites reportedly fail to implement these measures, increasing the risk of injuries and fatalities.

Alai insists that authorities enforce compliance to protect workers.

Call for comprehensive construction site audit

Alai demands an urgent audit of construction sites in Nairobi.

He has asked the Ministry of Labour, NCA, NEMA, and police to take immediate action.

The MCA wants an in-depth assessment of all sites in Westlands, Dagoretti North, and the wider Nairobi region. He believes this will prevent further accidents.

Police urged to investigate unreported cases

Alai has also called on the police to investigate concealed construction site injuries and deaths.

He argues that hiding such cases hinders justice and accountability.

He insists that NEMA enforce environmental safeguards.
