Meru Deputy Governor summoned by DCI over chaos at Mwangaza event as 10 suspects arrested

Police in Maua, Meru County, have arrested ten suspects following the violent attack on, and disruption of the public function of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

The incident – that occurred on September 17, 2023 at Bridge Preparatory School – left scores of residents and eight police officers seriously injured after being pelted with stones by the attackers.

Four vehicles, among them County Government and Police vehicles, were also destroyed.

Slaughtering a cow

The rowdy crowd also slaughtered a cow that had been donated by Governor Mwangaza, through her Okolea Project.

The suspects have since been identified as; Eliud Muchui, Eric Thuranira, Benjamin Mutua, Charles Andriano, James Mugambi, Elias Mutwiri, Anthony Mwenda, Eric Langat, Victor Muriithi and Ezekiel Nkunja.

The National Police Service (NPS) says they will be arraigned to answer to various charges including; taking part in an unlawful assembly, malicious damage to property, and assaulting police officers.

“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to maintenance of law and order,” NPS says.

Deputy Governor summoned by DCI

Meanwhile, Meru Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma was on Wednesday, September 20 summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the chaos.

Mutuma is expected to shed light on any information he may have about the incident.

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her deputy, Isaac Mutuma. Mutuma is accusing his boss of threatening and intimidating him. He has also faulted Governor Mwangaza over what he says is prioritising the wrong projects at the expense of Meru people.

Mutuma, together with his lawyer Marias Maranya, slammed Governor Mwangaza, alleging that the summoning was a ploy to threaten and intimidate him.

The deputy governor has been critical of Okolea Program, insisting that Mwangaza is prioritising at the expense of service delivery to the people.
