Meru Deputy Speaker loses two children in road accident

Meru County Assembly Deputy speaker Mwenda Ali has lost his two children after a grisly road accident along Meru-Nairobi Highway.

The MCA who sustained serious injuries is currently recuperating at Karen Hospital in Nairobi.

The fatal accident occurred on Tuesday along the Meru-Embu Road when Ali’s Subaru Legacy collided head-on with an oncoming double cabin at Kivwe in Embu County.

His vehicle immediately burst into flames, killing his daughter Melissa Makena instantly. Other people on board were Ali, his driver Michael Mwongera and another two-year-old girl.

The three, who were severely injured, were rushed to Ena Hospital for treatment before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

At the time of the accident, the Deputy Speaker was reportedly in the passenger seat. He sustained a deep cut in the head, dislocated his left knee and complained of chest pains.

According to reports, Mwenda Ali was driving from Meru to Nairobi to see off his wife who was set to fly to India for treatment.

Locals say they were alerted to the scene by a loud bang only to find Ali’s car in flames. They blocked the road attempting to rescue the trapped victims, causing massive traffic along that road.

Embu County Commander Nicholas Maina confirmed that the Subaru Legacy had four occupants, three of whom survived but with severe injuries.

“We have commenced investigations with a view of establishing what caused the accident,” Maina added.

He urged motorists to exercise caution as some accidents were avoidable.

“Drivers should observe traffic rules so that we don’t continue losing lives.”

The wreckage was towed to Embu West Police Station for inspection.
