Meru Members of County Assembly (MCAs) on Thursday August 8, 2024 voted to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza for a third time.
49 MCAs voted in favour of the impeachment motion, 17 voted against the motion while 3 were absent.
Her impeachment comes a few days after a section of Njuri Ncheke Meru council of elders agreed to be mediators between the Meru MCAs and governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Speaking at the Njuri Ncheke shrine at Ncheru in Tigania West sub county, Meru county on Monday August 5, 2024, a section of the elders led by Tigania Njuri Ncheke chairman Andriano Aruyaru refuted claims that they are incapable of resolving the stalemate between the Meru governor and a section of the MCAs.
On Thursday morning, security had been beefed up at the Meru County Assembly ahead of the debating of the motion of impeachment.
Led by North Imenti Sub-County Police Commander Aden Ario, the police officers were deployed around the premises, after reports that goons might invade the county assembly to interfere with debating of the impeachment motion against the governor.
According to media reports, gunshots were heard overnight after some goons reportedly tried to access the assembly.
Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya tabled a notice of motion to impeach the county boss.
The MCAs want Governor Mwangaza removed on grounds of gross violation of the constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office.
This comes even as Governor Kawira Mwangaza moved to Nairobi High Court to stop her impeachment.
In her petition, the governor urged the court to convict Kinya, Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi and Clerk Jacob Kirari to be convicted over alleged contempt of court.
