Meru: Police fire tear gas to disperse KeMU students protesting death of colleague

Police in Meru Town on Wednesday, February 26 lobbed tear gas to disperse students of Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), who were demonstrating following the death of their colleague.

The demonstrations were triggered after was found dead after he allegedly committed suicide. His body was found hanging on a tree near the university, but students say that was just a ploy, and that the student was killed.

According to the students, there has been multiple cases of insecurity—including murders, thefts and rapes—around the institution, faulting the police for not taking any action to address the situation.

During the protest, several students, including student leaders, were arrested by police officers who arrived in Subaru car.

The students have vowed not to relent until justice is served.
