Argentine forward and World Cup winner Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Soccer (MLS) for violating the league’s policy regarding raising hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee took the decision to fine Inter Miami forward Messi, 37, following an incident during the 2-2 draw with New York City FC on 22 February.
Messi was seen approaching a member of the opposition coaching staff and placing his hand on the back of their neck.
Incident Details
At full-time, Messi expressed frustration at referee Rosendo Mendoza, receiving a post-match yellow card on his way down the tunnel for his outburst.
Shortly after, NYCFC assistant Mehdi Ballouchy appeared to say something to Messi, sparking a heated exchange between the two.
Meanwhile, Messi’s Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez has also been fined for violating the same MLS policy earlier in the match.
Suarez was caught pinching the back of Norwegian defender Birk Risa’s neck during an incident at half-time.
MLS Disciplinary Action
The exact fines imposed on Messi and Suarez remain undisclosed.
In a statement, MLS confirmed that their disciplinary committee had ruled the former Barcelona stars guilty of violating the league’s “hands to the face/head/neck of an opponent” policy.
Messi’s Match Impact
Despite the disciplinary controversy, Messi played a key role in the 2-2 draw at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium.
He provided a stoppage-time equalizer assist for Telasco Segovia and also set up Tomas Avilés’ early goal before Avilés was sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
