Argentine football legend Lionel Messi secured his 46th major career trophy as Inter Miami claimed the MLS Supporters’ Shield with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew, the reigning MLS Cup champions. With this triumph, Messi solidified his position as the men’s football player with the most titles in history, scoring twice in the match.
This victory marks Inter Miami’s first major trophy in Major League Soccer (MLS) since the team’s debut in 2020. Miami finished the season with 68 points from 32 games, maintaining their lead and proving their strength against tough competition.
In addition to Messi’s contribution, Luis Suarez added a crucial goal just after the 63rd minute, helping Miami secure the three points. A penalty save by goalkeeper Drake Callender in the 84th minute ensured the win, sealing the team’s triumph.
Messi’s Return to International Duty
Following his success with Inter Miami, Messi is set to rejoin the Argentina national team for their upcoming South American World Cup qualifiers. Argentina, the reigning 2022 World Cup champions, will face Venezuela and Bolivia in the next round of qualifiers.
Messi, who recently missed matches due to an ankle injury sustained during the Copa America 2024 final against Colombia, is ready for a comeback. Coach Lionel Scaloni has included Messi in the squad for the match against Venezuela on October 10. Currently, Argentina leads the South American qualifiers with 18 points, ahead of Colombia (16 points) and Uruguay (15 points).
