Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) titleholder Michael Karanga has been crowned the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Sports Personality of the Month for November 2024.
November Triumph
Karanga’s recognition follows his impressive victory at the Kiambu Open, hosted at his home course, Kiambu Golf Club. This win not only solidified his position as the overall KAGC champion but also guaranteed his spot in the 2025 Magical Kenya Open as the nation’s top amateur golfer.
Stiff Competition
Karanga emerged victorious against a pool of exceptional nominees, including:
- Sheila Chepkurui, 2024 New York Marathon champion, who clocked a stellar time of 2:24:35 in her maiden major marathon win.
- Mercy Kerubo and Ian Okinyi, whose performances propelled Kenya to the top of the Africa Junior Weightlifting standings.
- Amos Obae, named Most Valuable Player at the Impala Floodlit Tournament after leading Menengai Oilers to their maiden victory.
- Meshack Babu, Africa Military 100m gold medalist.
- Ryan Ogam, Tusker FC striker and standout player in Kenyan football.
Season Highlights
Karanga was able to defend his Manchester Salver title in Eldoret and narrowly missing the course record he set in 2023. His performance in early December at the Uhuru Shield in Royal Nairobi saw him post an impressive 204 points at four under par (-4). He capped the year with nine title wins out of 17 competitions and a runner-up finish at the final event in Nyali.
