Michelle Obama speaks out on why she skipped Trump’s Inauguration: “I Chose Me”

In a personal episode of her new podcast IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, former First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about her decision not to attend President Donald Trump’s second inauguration dispelling rumors and affirming the importance of prioritizing mental and emotional well-being.

The conversation, which featured actress Taraji P. Henson as a guest, delved into the pressures of public life and the challenge of maintaining personal boundaries. Obama shared that one of her resolutions for the year was to honor her own needs and well-being, and that included saying “no” to certain obligations something she described as a muscle she’s still learning to strengthen.

“I made a commitment to myself this year,I was going to do less of what didn’t serve me,” she said. “And that meant I wasn’t going to the inauguration.”

Addressing the Rumors
Following her absence at the event, social media buzzed with speculation, and some news outlets hinted that her decision may have been linked to marital troubles with former President Barack Obama. Michelle didn’t shy away from those assumptions on the podcast.

“People said all kinds of things like maybe Barack and I were having issues, or I was angry about something,” she said. “It had nothing to do with that. I simply chose me. I chose my peace.”

To ensure she stuck to that decision, she didn’t even pack a suitable outfit for the occasion, taking away the temptation to go last-minute. It was a firm and deliberate act of self-care.

A Message of Empowerment
Michelle’s candid explanation sheds light on the quiet yet powerful act of choosing personal wellness over public expectation. She hopes her story resonates particularly with women who often feel obligated to show up for others even at the expense of themselves.

“I want young women out there to know it’s okay to say no. It doesn’t make you selfish. It makes you human.”

Her reflections add to a broader conversation about mental health, boundaries, and the unrealistic expectations placed on public figures especially women in leadership.

This episode of IMO not only debunks the false narratives around her absence but also serves as a reminder that sometimes, the most radical act is simply putting yourself first.
