Canada-based Kenyan Lawyer Miguna Miguna now says that he will oppose any move to amend the Constitution.

While responding to a presser by former Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairperson P.L.O Lumumba, Miguna said that amending the 2010 Constitution would be retrogressive.

According to Miguna, the 2010 Constitution should be fully implemented first before anyone thinks of amending it.

“I will oppose this retrogressive move even if I do so alone. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 should be fully implemented before anyone dreams of mutilating it. This will be the Waterloo for constitutional renegades,” Miguna says.

Lumumba: Time to amend

Miguna’s sentiments come a day after Lumumba categorically stated that it is now time for a constitutional amendment.

Speaking in a press briefing on Sunday, August 28, Lumumba argued that there are some aspects of the 2010 Constitution that need to be re-appealed.

“We are here to make known to Kenyans that we ought to engage in a conversation to commence a popular initiative to have our constitution amended,” PLO said.

– Miguna-Karua plea –

Miguna’s sentiments agree with those of Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua.

As the country marks 13 years since the promulgation of the Constitution, Karua on Sunday said that Kenya has a great constitution, but the problem is “we have deliberately failed to faithfully implement” it.

“The elephant in the room is lack of integrity across the board in the performance of public duty – institutions are as good as the people manning them – equally a constitution is as good as its implementers,” Karua said.
