National News

Lawyer Miguna Miguna has sued former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i over forced deportation in 2018.

Miguna noted in a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, October 5 that his lawyers had served court papers to Matiang’i.

“Today, my process server delivered court summons and pleadings in HCCC 163 of 2019 to Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i at his mansion in KCB Karen Ngong Estate,” Miguna stated.

“Matiang’i and other defendants must answer for torture, abuse of power, malicious prosecution, forced exile, and many other crimes. Justice shall prevail no matter how long it takes,” he added.

At the same time, he revealed that President William Ruto personally apologized to him at the beginning of 2023 regarding his deportation.

However, Miguna claimed that the president has not fulfilled his promise of ensuring those involved in the forced deportation are held responsible.

“In January, President ⁦William Ruto apologized to me over barbaric torture, forced exile, and horrendous treatment the government that he served as DP subjected me to.”

“He promised to have all the cases relating to those abuses resolved. 12 months later, I’m still waiting!” stated Miguna.

This was after Miguna was deported to Canada in February 2018, on grounds that he did not have valid documents to prove he was a Kenyan.

Miguna’s deportation was linked to his involvement in a mock swearing-in of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga as the people’s president on January 30 at Uhuru Park.

According to Miguna, police raided his home and arrested him a few days after Raila’s mock swearing-in ceremony event at Huru Park in Nairobi.

He later obtained a court order to secure his release but he was instead ejected out of the country.

Miguna alleged that he was mistreated by the police and immigration officials at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before he was forcefully bundled on a flight to Canada.
