Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has showered praise on German midfielder Kai Havertz ahead of their high-stakes North London derby on Sunday, September 24, 2023.
Speaking after Arsenal’s triumphant return to the Champions League with a 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates on Wednesday, Arteta expressed his admiration for Havertz, even though the German did not find the back of the net.
“He [Havertz] was very connected today. It’s true I asked him to play in two different roles [midfield and No 9]. And he is so intelligent in the way he does it. It’s just finishing one or two actions that we had again, but it’s coming and he’s so willing to do it,” Arteta remarked.
Havertz, who was acquired from cross-city rivals Chelsea, was included in the Gunners’ starting line-up in place of Fabio Vieira and played the full 90 minutes while witnessing Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus, and Martin Odegaard all find the back of the net.
Arteta now faces a decision between Kai Havertz and Vieira for the left-sided midfield role against Tottenham on Sunday.
Additionally, there is a dilemma regarding who to select in goal between Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya.
Son Heung-min warns Arsenal ahead of derby
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has issued a warning to Arsenal ahead of the upcoming North London derby on Sunday.
Both teams have made an impressive start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, each amassing 13 points from their initial five matches.
The South Korea international who took over the captaincy following the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, believes that Arsenal won’t relish facing Spurs given their current form.
“[Arsenal] won’t want to face us at this time. Everyone is running for each other; everyone is fighting for each other. If someone comes off, you give a hand off and everyone is happy to do that. That makes us really strong as a team,” he said.
Spurs have showcased their attacking prowess, winning their last four league games, including a thrilling comeback against Sheffield United.
On the other hand, Arsenal, while not as potent in attack, have displayed defensive resilience, conceding only four goals, a feat bettered only by Manchester City.
