Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel has hailed Jose Mourinho as the best coach he worked with during his football career, describing their relationship as akin to that of a father and son.
Speaking on a podcast, the Nigerian midfield maestro revealed how Mourinho not only shaped his football journey but also played a crucial role in keeping him humble and grounded off the pitch.
Mourinho’s Influence on Mikel’s Career
Mikel recalled how Mourinho took a personal interest in his financial decisions and lifestyle choices, ensuring he remained disciplined and focused.
“He always asked me, ‘What did you do with your salary? Did you put it in the bank? Did you buy a house?’” Mikel revealed.
“He was always trying to find out what I was doing, and for me, he made sure I kept my feet on the ground. I was always humble and respectful.”
One of the most memorable moments in their relationship came when Mikel splurged on a Range Rover after receiving his first salary at Chelsea.
“I remember when I joined the club, I got my first salary; I went and bought a Range Rover,” Mikel recounted. “He saw it and told me to return it. He told me to get a Mini instead.”
Mikel’s Legacy at Chelsea
Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 after a dramatic transfer battle with Manchester United, moving from Norwegian side Lyn. Under Mourinho’s guidance, he became a key figure in Chelsea’s midfield and spent 11 successful seasons at Stamford Bridge.
During his time at Chelsea, Mikel won multiple major titles, including: 2 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 UEFA Europa League and 2 League Cups
He played under Mourinho twice first between 2004 and 2007, and again during Mourinho’s second stint in 2015, before the manager left in 2017.
“Chelsea’s Story is Incomplete Without Mourinho”
Mikel acknowledged Mourinho’s legendary status, emphasizing that Chelsea’s success would be incomplete without the mention of the Portuguese tactician.
“He was the ‘Special One’ for a reason. You know he wins trophies—that’s what he does. He is so good at winning trophies,” Mikel stated.
“When you talk about Chelsea, you cannot talk about Chelsea football club without mentioning Jose Mourinho.”
With Mourinho’s ability to win silverware wherever he goes, it’s clear why Mikel holds him in such high regard.
