The Ministry of Sports has finally bowed to pressure and made public the list of Kenya’s delegation to the 2024 Paris Olympics, which is just 7 days away.
This decision came after public concerns arose that there might be individuals accompanying the athletes, coaches, medical staff, and other officials to Paris at taxpayers’ expense, without valid roles.
Various Kenyans, including Bevalyne Kwamboka, a former vendor and advocate, petitioned the Ministry of Sports, then led by former Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, urging the publication of the list of attendees and their respective roles.
Under mounting pressure, the former CS directed the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) to disclose the list. Today, on Thursday 18th, NOC-K, through the Preparatory Management Committee, released the names of 161 individuals who will represent Kenya at the Olympics.
The delegation, headed by Sports Principal Secretary Eng. Peter Tum, comprises 81 athletes, 43 coaching and medical staff, and 37 members from media and NOC-K.
NOC-K Secretary General Francis Mutuku, speaking earlier today about Team Kenya’s readiness, assured that no unnecessary personnel would be traveling to Paris: “We’re very clear that everyone going to Paris has a crucial role to play in ensuring Kenyan athletes perform at their best this year.”
Meanwhile, some teams are already in France, preparing in Miramas for the global event. The Kenya Sevens team, Shujaa, was the first to depart, followed by the Women’s Volleyball team, Malkia Strikers.
Last week, the Mayor of Miramas officially welcomed Team Kenya to the city, where they are currently training.
