Lionel Messi’s bodyguard, former Navy SEAL Yassine Cheuko, has revealed that Major League Soccer (MLS) has forbidden him from stepping foot on the pitch, restricting his security duties to behind-the-scenes operations.
“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” Cheuko stated.
Reflecting on his experience, he pointed out the stark contrast in pitch invasions between Europe and the United States. “I was in Europe for seven years working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch. I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
Cheuko emphasized his willingness to assist not just Inter Miami but also the entire CONCACAF region in strengthening security for players and spectators. “I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping. I’m not better than anyone, but I have a wealth of experience in Europe. It’s fine, I understand their decision, but I think we could do better.”
One of the most notable incidents involving Cheuko was during Inter Miami’s visit to Panama when a pitch invader knocked him down. However, he took the situation in stride, even finding humor in it. His presence has been a common sight at Messi’s fixtures, ensuring the football star’s safety as overenthusiastic fans attempt to get close to their idol. Many have been tackled before they could reach Messi.
Despite the restriction, Cheuko will continue safeguarding Messi at games across multiple competitions. He has become an integral part of the Argentine superstar’s security team, with responsibilities extending beyond physical protection. “I feel like I’m part of his family, and I’m working hard to protect him, not only physically but also psychologically, because he trusts me a lot and depends on me, and I give him all my attention. He’s very humble,” he said.
Meanwhile, Messi recently returned to action for Inter Miami, coming off the bench to score in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union. He is also expected to feature in a CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final clash against LAFC on Wednesday.
