The Moi University graft suspects summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Corruption Commission (EACC) over corruption involving infrastructural projects worth KSh2,189,659,497 on Monday, November 19 started recording statements before the commission’s offices in Eldoret.
Three officials including Chief Accountant Egla Samoei, Head of Procurement Wilson Bett and Head of Development Unit Moses Kipkulei are expected to record their statements today while the Vice Chancellor Prof Isaac Kosgei is expected to appear before the detectives tomorrow, Wednesday, November 20.
Wilson Bett (Head of Procurement) and Moses Kipkulei (Head of University Development) already reported at EACC Eldoret offices where they are held for the exercise.
In the summons letter dated 14th November 2024 signed on behalf of CEO Twalib Mbarak by EACC North Rift Regional Manager Charles Rasugu, the Commission instructed the University to avail various documents by close of business today, Tuesday, 19th November, 2024 including approved institutional budgets for the last 8 financial years and minutes for 18 special council meetings.
The Vice Chancellor is also accused of attempting to obstruct the Commission in its work by failing to submit these documents for 5 months despite several reminders, which EACC said is a criminal offence under the law.
The Commission says it has intensified focus on public universities where Vice Chancellors and other top officials are directly or indirectly facilitating and abetting corruption and unethical practices, which threatens the quality and standards of higher education in the country.
