Moi University students to face disciplinary action for wearing skin tight trousers, crocs

Moi University has banned particular clothes in new regulations warning that failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.

The clothes that have been prohibited include skin tight trousers, mini skirts, ragged jeans, “transparent” dresses (chiffon), cropped tops and blouses, clothing with obscene writing, sagging trousers and any clothes that reveal bra straps.

Crocs and other forms of plastic shoes have also been prohibited within the university premises.

According to a memo issued by the Dean of Students at the University, the institution vowed to take stern action against students who fail to comply.

The formation of these new regulations was informed by a growing rise of indecent dressing among the students, especially ladies.

A section of the students is however displeased by these new rules arguing everyone is entitled to dress as they please.

“The university administration believes that enforcing these measures will contribute to a more respectable and focused academic environment but we don’t think that is the case,” one student said, “everyone has a right to dress the way they want.”

The institution recently made headlines when locals wanted Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kosgey fired. It resulted to negotiating with the locals.

Members of the neighboring community protested demanding for change of the university’s top leadership.

As a result, the University’s administration on November 30, disclosed that it was ready to enhance good working relationships with the community.

For instance on September 27, 2023 angry residents who were protesting, demanded for the removal of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kosgey over alleged mismanagement of the university.

The demonstrators had also noted that former Moi University acting Vice Chancellor Laban Ayiro, was better than the current VC.

Speaking during a press briefing on November 30, 2023 Senior lecturer Professor Masibo Lumala disclosed that the institution’s administration was ready to negotiate with the community, to address some of their concerns.

“We will definitely want to involve the community in the planning and celebration of the University at 40 next year. 

“We wouldn’t want to have a scenario where the University has challenges with the local community,” Lumala said.

The senior lecturer at the university added that some of the concerns that were raised by the residents during protests have been addressed.

According to Prof. Lumala, the residents had pointed out allegations of alcohol and drug abuse within Moi University, with allegations that the current VC has not fully addressed.
