A furious mob killed a man at Vyemani Grounds in Mombasa after he waved an AK-47 rifle and fired several shots into the air.
According to the police report, officers from Inuka swiftly responded to the scene.
“The officers arrived to find a male suspect who had been beaten to death by members of the public. An Ak-47 rifle with twelve rounds of ammunition, a mobile phone and four spent cartridges were recovered from the scene ,” police reported.
Police revealed that the suspect had a motorcycle ridden by Antony Otieno, which helped in his movement from Likoni Primary School to Vyemani Grounds.
When the suspect arrived, he allegedly refused to pay the fare and instead started making phone calls.
According to the police, when Mr. Otieno asked for payment, the suspect allegedly pulled an AK-47 rifle from his bag, cocked it, and fired it into the air to intimidate him.
A struggle broke out when the suspect tried to escape on the motorcycle.
However, Mr. Otieno was able to wrestle the firearm away, though not before the suspect fired several rounds.
During the confrontation, two bystanders were struck by stray bullets.
A woman sustained injuries to her left thigh and abdomen, while a man was hit in the abdomen.
The victims were promptly taken to Likoni Sub County Hospital, where they are said to be in stable condition.
The incident attracted a crowd of people that overpowered the suspect and killed him.
The suspect’s body was taken to Coast General Mortuary waiting for post- mortem and identification .
The recovered items were taken to Inuka Police Station as the DCI continued with investigation.
Meanwhile, Police urged members of the public not to take law into their hands but instead hand over suspects to authorities.
