Thieves invaded a mosque in the Bakarani area of Kisauni constituency in Mombasa County and made away with two coffins, local leader Mohamed Hamid has confirmed.
Hamid revealed in a statement that the coffins were stolen from Marhaba Mosque and were discovered missing on Thursday, February 2, 2024, when they were preparing for a burial ceremony at the mosque.
The two coffins were made from aluminum. Twalib Dola, Frere Town chief, confirmed the incident and added that the thieves had also made away with ten iron sheets. The incident was reported at Mbungoni Police Station.
Thieves break into church and steal Sh.3m cash offering
In January 2023, CapeMedia.Africa reported that police in Tanzania were investigating a robbery incident involving a break-in at a church, during which thieves made away with tithe money totaling more than three million Tanzanian shillings.
The incident occurred in the Hai District of Kilimanjaro Province. The criminals targeted the office of the accountant at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, Parish of Nronga, Hai district.
The church locally known as Kanisa la Kiinjili la Kilutheri Tanzania (KKKT), Usharika wa Nronga, additionally, lost a laptop valued at 780,000 Tanzanian shillings – which the thieves stole too.
Uganda: Thieves steal Sh15 million offertory from church
Last month, police launched investigations into an incident where thugs broke into a Catholic church and stole an offertory worth Ush15 million in Wakiso District, Uganda.
Other items including priests’ robes were destroyed during the incident at Our Lady of Assumption Mwereerwe Catholic Parish in Kyambizzi village, Gombe sub-county.
This was after unknown people broke into the church last week and destroyed priest’s robes before escaping with offertory worth Ush15 million and other church items.

Speaking to the media on January 17, 2024, the Parish priest Rev. James Matovu said that they discovered some items and money were missing during the following morning mass for the congregants.
