Moon Taeil, South Korean Singer leaves band NCT over sex scandal

Taeil, from the world known K-pop band NCT has departed from it after the authorities started investigating him on unspecified sex crime.

His agency, SM Entertainment, released a statement on X, saying the NCT member will depart from the boy band after learning about the seriousness of the crime.

The band then decided Taeil, whose legal name is Moon Tae-il, can no longer “continue his activities with the team”.

His agency said that he is fully cooperating with the police in the investigations.

“We will provide further statements as the investigation progresses,” the statement, which was posted in Korean and translated by Associated Press, said.

Taeil was part of NCT, or Neo Culture Technology, a globally popular South Korean boy band that debuted in 2016.

Taeil once held the Guinness World Record for the fastest person to ever reach 1 million followers on Instagram.

He hit the mark in November 2020 but the title has been held by Kim Taehyung ‘V’ of the Korean boy band BTS since 2021.

On August 15, 2023, Taeil was involved in a road accident in downtown Seoul, South Korea, while travelling on his motorcycle.

At that time, he temporarily suspended his schedules to focus on treatment and recovery.
