Anti-corruption activist Morara Kebaso who was arrested on September 30, 2024, and subsequently arraigned in Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi, has been freed on a Ksh50,000 cash bail.
This was after he was charged with Cyber Harassment contrary to section 27 of the computer misuse and cyber crimes.
He is accused of posting hate speech remarks on social media, against President William Ruto and former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker David Langat.
Morara had accused President Ruto of soliciting financial support from Langat for his campaign, forcing Langat to take loans and use his property as collateral.
The Activist further claimed that Langat is now facing foreclosure, with banks moving to auction his properties allegedly bought by Ruto at undervalued prices.
“September 28th 2024 at a unknown place within the republic of Kenya, jointly with others not before court while using his X account Morara Kebaso knowingly without lawful excuse posted false information, content whose information was false and calculated to tarnish and discredit the reputation of one David Langat,” the report read.
His arrest sparked protests in Nairobi on Tuesday morning as demonstrators demanded his release. Videos from the scene showed Morara being forcibly placed into a Subaru Forester before being driven away.
Protesters, including Senator Okiya Omtatah, were met with tear gas and police resistance during the demonstrations.
Various bloggers and activist showed support for Morara including, Irungu Houghton, Executive Director of Amnesty International Kenya, who condemned the arrest as an abuse of law enforcement and a violation of Morara’s rights.
“We demand an end to the targeted harassment of bloggers, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders. These arrests violate the right to free expression,” said Irungu.
Morara’s allegations have sparked significant controversy and debate, raising questions about freedom of expression and the role of activists in holding public figures accountable.
