Janet Lynne Savage, a dedicated mother of two and driving examiner lost her life after a weight-loss surgery in Turkey went tragically wrong.
At just 54 years old, Janet had decided to undergo gastric sleeve surgery in Antalya, hoping it would help her regain control over her health.
However, during the procedure, a critical complication arose that ultimately led to her untimely passing.
An inquest held in Caernarfon revealed that Janet had reached out to Regenesis Health Travel in early July 2023, signing up for the surgery in Turkey within 24 hours.
Struggling with weight gain after no longer having access to the medication Ozempic, she hoped the surgery would help her shed three stones.
With a body mass index (BMI) of 30.7, she fell within the NHS’s “obese” range, though only at its very start.
On the day of her surgery, however, disaster struck.
A few minutes into the procedure, Janet stopped breathing, triggering an emergency response from the surgical team.
According to translated notes from her surgeon, Dr. Ramazan Azar, the operation revealed a defect in her abdominal aorta, a main artery.
Though the medical team attempted to repair the artery and cancelled the remainder of the surgery, they were ultimately unable to save her.
Despite intensive care efforts, Janet passed away.
Senior Coroner Kate Robertson confirmed that a post-mortem conducted upon her return to Wales revealed acute blood loss from the aortic injury.
The tragic complication proved fatal, and her inquest recorded a narrative conclusion, with the coroner expressing her heartfelt condolences to Janet’s grieving family.
Her loved ones now face the painful aftermath of a hopeful journey that ended in tragedy.
