MP Oscar Sudi: Impeachment is not about hatred, but someone being unfit for office

Kapseret member of parliament (MP) Oscar Sudi has said that impeachment of a government officials is not about hatred but is usually guided by the rule of law, especially if a leader is unfit to hold office.

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday February 4, 2025, Sudi said that any leader can be impeached, adding that even President William Ruto can be impeached if he takes part in divisive politics.

Sudi pointed out that the country did not come to halt when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was removed from office.

“Did the country stop when Gachagua was removed? Will it stop if we remove Ruto?” Sudi asked, adding that Ruto could also be impeached if he became divisive.

He also argued that Kenyans would eventually understand why Gachagua had to go, due to alleged incitement and divisive politics.

“One day, you’ll understand it was necessary for Gachagua to leave. We can’t have someone incite Kenyans or refuse to build anything,” he said.

Sudi compared his record to Gachagua’s, claiming he had achieved more in two years of service.

“Gachagua has been in office for two years, and so have I. Let him show his record. I have done more than him,” he added.

Meanwhile, last year when some Kenyans suggested both Ruto and Gachagua should be impeached together, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa explained that it is not common.

Barasa noted that in counties, even where governors and deputies are elected together, impeachment motions usually target just one individual.

“This practice ensures the county still has leadership even if one is impeached, a principle that applies to the nation as well,” said Barasa.
