Mumias East member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya was on Friday, January 12 arrested for allegedly assaulting a politician.
The first time legislator was featured in a viral video assaulting the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Malaha/Isongo Ward Peter Walunya Indimuli at a funeral in Mumias, Kakamega County.
Salasya however will not spend the weekend behind bars as he was released on a KSh50,000 cash bail pending arraignment on Tuesday next week.
Police said he will be facing charges of assault which is a violation of section 251 of the penal code.
He will also answer to charges of creating disturbance at the funeral, breaching peace in accordance with section 95 (1) of the penal code.
His two bodyguards who swiftly hurled him away from the fast escalating situation, were also ordered to hand over their firearms, which are undergoing ballistic analysis.
According to his statement, the assaulted MCA Indimuli said he took to the podium during the funeral of Jesmus Kodia at Maraba village to welcome Salasya who is the area MP.
It appears however that when the lawmaker took the microphone he began making unpalatable sentiments which forced the MCA to request him to observe decorum during the sombre event.
However, according to the clip making rounds on social media, Salasya descdended on the MCA with slaps and blows forcing security personnel to intervene.
Panic rocked the mourners as some for safety while gunshots erupted.
Officers from Shianda Police Station responded to distress calls to restore calm and allow the funeral to proceed uninterrupted.
The MCA had his P3 form processed while police launched a manhunt for Salasya and arrested him within the day.
Salasya is not new to controversy as he was arrested a few months ago for threatening a magistrate who ordered him to refund KSh500,000 he owed a businessman.
