MPs summon Energy CS Chirchir, Kenya Power CEO

The National Assembly on Saturday, August 26, summoned Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror to appear before the House’s Committee on Energy on Thursday next.

Siror is expected to explain to the House committee about the nationwide power outage that occurred on Friday night.

The MPs have also summoned Energy cabinet secretary Davis Chirchir, to shed light on the issue of the countrywide blackout.

“The chairman has directed that we summon the CS Energy together with the CEO KPLC on Thursday to explain the cause of the current nationwide blackout which has paralyzed the nation, including the International Airport,” read part of a statement from the House committee.

In a statement, the MPs noted that it was embarrassing for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to experience a power blackout for two hours.

The House committee indicated that both the Energy CS and the Kenya Power CEO should be ready to give satisfactory reasons as to why the blackout lasted that long countrywide.

Kenya Power released a statement confirming reports of the major blackout in the country that was attributed to a general system disturbance.

The company released another statement Saturday morning, explaining that it had successfully restored power supply to JKIA.

It also noted that power provision had been reinstated in other vital zones across Nairobi.

“We have successfully restored power supply to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other critical areas within the Nairobi Metropolitan,” Kenya Power noted.

Kenya Power explained that it had teams working to restore electricity to all areas across the country that were affected by the outage.
