Muigua clinches first KAGC win at NCBA Winston Churchill Cup

Elvis Muigua secured his first victory of the 2025 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) season at the NCBA Winston Churchill Cup, held at Thika Sports Club over the weekend. The Ndumberi Golf Club player’s consistent performance earned him the top spot, ahead of a competitive field.

Muigua’s impressive form was evident throughout the three-day tournament. He carded rounds of 69, 75, and 68, culminating in a total score of 212 (four-under-par). This win not only earned him a cash prize of KSh115,600 but also propelled him to second place in the KAGC Series standings with 200 points, narrowly trailing leader John Lejirma by four points.

Muigua credited his disciplined approach for his success. “This course is relatively simple if you know your misses and stay disciplined,” he said. “My strategy was to play fairways, hit greens in regulation, and let the putter work—and it really did. Putting was key for me in this tournament.”

Karanga’s return to form

Michael Karanga, Muigua’s clubmate and the 2024 KAGC champion, finished second with rounds of 71, 76, and 70 (217, +1). Karanga acknowledged his return to form, praising the course conditions and his final round performance. “This was a very well-organized tournament. The greens were rolling really well,” he said. “I’ve been off for a while, but I’m working my way back.”

Karanga also noted the course’s challenges, stating, “This course can be tricky, it rewards discipline but punishes greed.”

Maara acknowledges Muigua’s strength

Dennis Maara of Limuru Country Club, a former Team Kenya captain and past Winston Churchill Cup winner, finished third with rounds of 72, 73, and 76 (221, +5). Maara acknowledged Muigua’s dominance, stating, “On the last day, unfortunately, I met a very strong Muigua. He was very strong, and he didn’t collapse at any point.”

Tournament’s growing stature

The NCBA Winston Churchill Cup attracted 78 top amateurs and is a key event on the KAGC calendar. Kenya Golf Union Chairman David Ndung’u lauded the tournament’s resurgence. “It’s a good thing to see how far this event has come,” Ndung’u said. “We’ve seen a strong field, solid sponsorship, and brilliant golf.”

Muigua’s victory signifies a major accomplishment in his amateur career, positioning him as a prominent figure in Kenyan golf.
