Police in Lang’ata sub-county have launched investigations into the mysterious death of a first-year student at Multimedia University, whose body was discovered inside a water tank within the campus premises.
The victim, identified as Sylvia Kemunto, had been missing since Sunday before her lifeless body was found last evening. According to Nairobi County Police Commander George Seda, officers were alerted by students after the shocking discovery.
“We received reports that the body of a young lady had been seen inside a water tank within the institution. Investigations are ongoing,” Seda said.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the deceased’s boyfriend, who is currently missing. Witnesses claim he was the last person seen leaving Kemunto’s room at Block E within the university.
Kemunto’s body has been moved to the City Mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
Meanwhile, the Multimedia University Student Association (MUKSA) has called for calm among students as investigations continue. In a statement, the MUKSA Secretary-General described the incident as a “wake-up call” to address gender-based violence and toxic masculinity.
“We must confront the reality of gender-based violence and create a culture that respects and protects our women,” the statement read in part. The student leaders have also planned a prayer session and sensitization programs to raise awareness on safety and non-violence.
