Transport cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen issued an apology over the power blackout at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

This was after the blackout lasted for about two hours at the JKIA, affecting major activities at the airport.

“I am really sorry for what has happened at JKIA with the blackout. There is no excuse worth reporting and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness,” stated Murkomen.

This was after Kenyans raised concerns about the lack of alternative power backup generators at the international airport.

The Transport CS called for calm, as he promised to hold a meeting with the airport’s management to establish the real cause of the blackout.

“I will be announcing the decision we will make tomorrow at 9 am at JKIA after a meeting with the leadership of the airport,” Murkomen said.

The airport was among several other public and private facilities that were affected by the power blackout that affected the whole country.

On the other hand, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) attributed the nearly 2-hour power outage at the JKIA to system failures.

In a press statement, KAA explained that the main generator serving JKIA’s Terminal 1A had failed to start after the blackout.

“Following a nationwide power blackout, one of the generators serving JKIA’s T1A & Parking Silo failed to start resulting in an outage in a section of the airport,” KAA explained.

“This has been rectified & all generators are now fully operational. Power has been restored to the affected areas,” the authority added.
