Transport cabinet secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday, August 26 terminated the contract of Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Alex Gitari.
The Transport CS, at the same time appointed Henry Ogoye as acting Managing Director for the Kenya Airport Authority.
Murkomen made the changes at KAA, after a blackout affected activities at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Friday night for almost two hours.
He made the announcement during a press briefing at JKIA, after inspecting and assessing the situation at the international airport.
“The contract of Alex Gitari who had been the managing director of Kenya Airports Authority has been terminated. His position is to be taken over by Henry Ogoye who has been Head of Corporate Affairs,” he stated.
JKIA airport manager Abel Gogo was transferred with immediate effect to Mombasa in the changes, as his position was taken by Selina Gor.
At the same time, Transport CS terminated the contract of Project and Engineering Services General Manager Fred Odawo and appointed Eng. Samuel Mwochache to replace him in an acting capacity.
He also called for the immediate commissioning of two generators that were recently procured at JKIA, in order to avoid similar power inconveniences in case of blackouts.
He had earlier apologized to the nation over the inconveniences caused by the power blackout at the JKIA.
“I am really sorry for what has happened at JKIA with the blackout. There is no excuse worth reporting and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness,” stated Murkomen.
