Lawyer and political activist Morara Kebaso has disclosed that his attack at the Bomas of Kenya during the public participation on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment motion was planned before hand.
Speaking to Spice FM on Monday, October 7, Kebaso shared his belief that plans for the assault had been made well before he arrived at the venue, with security forces potentially compromised.
Kebaso said that while he had gone to the event as an ordinary citizen to share his views, the situation quickly turned violent.
“It seems plans had been made much earlier that I would be attacked. It’s the public that demanded I speak, but it was not the wish of the emcee, TJ Kajwang’. I was cornered, my bodyguard was injured, and I was hit by more than 30 metallic chairs,” he said.
He reflected on the situation, stating, “It is now that I am juggling memory to see where I got it wrong, and I think there were enough red flags that I should have seen but did not. We fall, we rise, we learn.”
Kebaso also claimed that police blocked his entry to the venue until the public intervened, allowing him in. However, he claims that even after gaining access, officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) further restricted him.
“I had announced that I would go for the public participation exercise and my position was that we should impeach both the President and the deputy. Having made this position known, some people were uncomfortable with that,” he said.
Upon entry, a senior police officer only permitted Kebaso to enter with one member of his security team. He noted that this severely compromised his safety.
“I don’t know whether the police intended to compromise my security, but I was only allowed in with one person,” he recounted.
Kebaso further described how goons threw chairs at him, leaving him unable to move. “Some goons came from behind the dais to cause chaos, throwing chairs at me,” he said. His attempts to escape were unsuccessful as exits had been locked. He believes he already knows who incited the attack.
In his frail public appearance following the incident, Kebaso demanded that Police IG Douglas Kanja arrest those responsible, pointing out that the attack was captured on television.
