Jowie Irungu’s mother now says her son is innocent in the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
Speaking to the press after Justice Grace Nzioka’s verdict, Jowie’s mother remained confident that her son would not serve his sentence.
“I believe my son is innocent. Hajafanya makosa yoyote. Hajaua mtu yeyote. I believe in the God of a second chance and he will get him out of jail.
“He is like Joseph. Joseph was mistreated like this but eventually God got him out of jail. I believe God will fight for my son in His own time, that is why I am still standing,” she explained.
Jowie’s defense lawyer noted that they expected the just released sentencing, but all was not lost for the convict.
“We are not shocked with the sentence… Jowie is innocent, and at the Court of Appeal we will be vindicated,” he asserted.
He disclosed that notice of appeal on Jowie’s sentencing is ready, and shall be submitted after further consultations.
According to the defense, Justice Grace Nzioka convicted Jowie purely based on clothes he was purportedly seen wearing that day, which is not sufficient to declare him the murderer.
“One thing is clear- the Hon Justice built a mountain out of the clothes that Jowie wore especially those brown khaki shorts he wore.
“She had to built a mountain out of those brown shorts because that’s the only thing she had that would link Jowie to Monica Kimani’s murder.”
Jowie’s lawyer stated that the shorts bearing a drop of blood with Monica’s DNA on them were not the same shorts he actually wore on the day he reportedly committed the offense.
Apparently, Jowie donned brown khaki shorts with side pockets, but those presented before the court did not have side pockets.
He accused prosecution of declining to present pictorial evidence of the said shorts which would have vindicated him in the heinous murder.
“Jowie Joseph Irungu is innocent and we shall prove it,” the lawyer concluded.
