Mystery as 40 memorial crosses are stolen from Kirinyaga cemetery

Residents of Kirinyaga County are concerned over the mysterious theft of memorial crosses in cemeteries.

According to the residents, thieves target the metallic crosses leaving behind the wooden ones.

At St Mary’s Village Home For The Aged Women in Sagana, over 40 crosses have been stolen by unknown people.

Fredlick Kabue, who works at Catholic Church-run institution, the suspected thieves had been stealing the crosses in the cemetery for the aged from last year.

Kabue says that at first they stole over 10 crosses until they stole all the iron crosses leaving wooden ones behind.

The Sister-in-charge, Sister Teresiah, says they buried the aged women according to their ages from 1974 and are wondering where the thieves are taking the crosses. 

Sister Teresiah said theft had been happening since last year and on Christmas eve, the thieves stole five metal crosses near the figure of Jesus Christ.
