Nairobi: 13 bodies of flood victims recovered

The Nairobi County government on Thursday April 25, 2024 confirmed that the death toll has reached 13 due to flooding in different party of the city.

This was after three bodies were retrieved on Thursday morning, as hundreds of Nairobians were displaced by floods as a result of the ongoing heavy rains.

According to local authorities, 11 bodies were retrieved in Mathare, one in Kibera and another one in Kayole.

The heavy rains have also destroyed property, business premises, bridges, a section of roads and homes.

In Mwea, Embu County one person, who was riding a motorbike drowned after being washed away by the floods.

“They encouraged one another to cross the stream on board a motorbike and at the middle of the stream, the motorbike engine went off and they washed away. One of the victims Munyao Muia managed to rescue himself and the other one drowned,” read part of police report.

Eslewhere in Koibatek, Baringo County, a 7-year-old boy was killed by floods at Tmboroa stage along the Eldoret –Nakuru highway.

“According to a boy aged around 10yrs, they were looking after sheep with the deceased along the road as they were playing beside the stagnant water. Accidentally the deceased slipped off inside the water. He tried to rescue him but it was unsuccessful,” police noted in a statement.

In Starehe, Nairobi, an incident was reported at Kariobangi Police station about a person who was drowned in Mathare River.

“It was reported today at around 1430hrs. The reporter saw a body of unknown male adult at Gitathuru area which was stuck between debris that had been swept away by Mathare river at Gitathuru bridge,” police reported.

Another drowning incident was reported at Muthaiga police station about three women who were killed by floods.

 “At the scene it was established that  bodies of three female adults : a female aged 20 years, female adult aged 50 years and one woman aged about  22 years were all retrieved after the water subsided,” police reported. 

The bodies were found inside the structures at the edge of the river which had burst its banks due to overnight rains which led to structures submerging along the river.
