Nairobi: 7 ‘mchele gang’ members arrested after drugging, SIM swapping and stealing victim’s KSh250,000

Seven suspects believed to be members of a syndicate of fraudsters involved in a series of stupefying and illegal transfer of cash through mobile money transactions within Nairobi County have been arrested.

The suspects were arrested on Thursday, February 20 night in a crackdown by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

The DCI says that the operation was initiated following a complaint by a male victim who fell prey to the syndicate that reportedly involved seven fraudsters, three women and four men.

How it went down…

In a well calculated move targeting the seemingly cash-rich victim, two of the male suspects — Moses Munene Mwangi and Lephines Mwangi Mwai — fraudulently registered several sim cards used to swap the victim’s cards, while the ladies fed him with spiked drinks.

The February 20 incident saw the victim lose KSh250,000, after his mobile money and bank accounts were swept clean, prompting him to report the case at Kiamumbi Police Station and the DCI Headquarters.

“On Friday, February 21, 2025, Moses Munene and Lephines Mwangi were traced to Kahawa West and arrested having several unregistered sim cards, before heading to Githurai 44 where Maureen Wambui Wanjohi, Purity Wamaitha Njuguna and Jemimah Muiya Mitau were rounded up. The three were directly linked to KSh110,000 of the stolen amount,” the DCI says.

The investigations did not stop there, as the detectives cast their nets wider. This led to the arrest of Isaac Kanini Mugo and James Omwenga in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

“The two are believed to have illegally transferred some of the victim’s money from his Mpesa and Money Market Forex accounts,” the DCI adds.

The seven are currently held at Kiamumbi Police Station pending arraignment.
