A multi-agency team has taken advantage of the ongoing holidays to intensify road repairs and upgrades in Nairobi, as promised by the Governor at the beginning of this month.
Key roads are being recarpeted, potholes filled, and drainage systems improved, with some roads temporarily closed to facilitate the work.
Governor Sakaja Johnson has assured residents that the ongoing repairs will continue into the new year.
“Kipande Road has been temporarily closed to facilitate a drainage upgrade aimed at addressing the persistent flooding at the Ojijo Road roundabout. The current drainage system, which consists of a 1200 mm pipe connecting to a 600 mm pipe at Ojijo, has caused backflow and significant flooding. As agreed with the national government, we have intensified roadworks. Several other roads within estates are also undergoing repairs,” Sakaja confirms.
Jogoo Road has seen partial closures as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) takes charge of the repairs.
“Nairobians don’t care whether a road falls under the county or national government; they just want it fixed. That is exactly what we are doing. I appreciate the input of the national government and our county roads department in ensuring progress. We are committed to ensuring Nairobians have better roads. Give us some time, and more areas will be addressed,” Sakaja reiterated.
The Governor also highlighted several completed and ongoing road projects under the county government, emphasizing a ward-to-ward approach to ensure all areas are addressed.
“Kisauni Road in Nairobi West Ward, Kawangware Market Road, Pam-Baraka Road Mung’etho in Mowlem Ward, Nyayo Highrise Roads, the access road to Ruthimitu Girls High School in Uthiru/Ruthimitu Ward, Ziwa and Kahawa Wards Roads, the access road to Roysambu Primary School in Zimmerman, Lenana B Road in Ngando Ward, and Nyangusu Road in Umoja are just a few examples of roads being recarpeted,” confirmed Governor Sakaja.
The holiday season repairs are part of a broader effort to improve Nairobi’s road network and address long-standing challenges, including flooding and poor road conditions.
