Nairobi: Businessman sentenced to 2 years in jail for bribing police officer with Ksh100,000

A businessman has been convicted by a Nairobi Anti -Corruption court for giving a bribe of Ksh. 100,000 to a female police officer.

During a court ruling on Thursday August 22, 2024, Paul Mwangi Warutere was fined Ksh.300,000 or serve 2 years imprisonment.

This was after prosecuting counsel Victor Onyiego established a bribery case against the accused person beyond reasonable doubt.

“Warutere gave Ksh.100,000 to a Police Corporal attached to Central police station within Nairobi County with the aim of gaining favours from the investigating officer in Milimani in which the accused person, his father and wife were charged with conspiracy to defraud millions of shillings,” read part of the DPP statement.

According to the DPP, the bribery incident occurred on January 16, 2020 within Nairobi.

The sentencing of the businessman comes a few days after the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) released details of police officers facing bribery charges in Nairobi.

For instance on August 11, a police officer assigned to a roundabout in Nairobi was arrested over bribery allegations.

EACC announced in a Gazette Notice that the bribery offense occurred in January 2023.

The Commission disclosed that it had received a public complaint alleging that police officers had enlisted a civilian to collect bribes on their behalf.

At that time, the officers were stationed near the flyover from Muthurwa towards the Country Bus Station in Nairobi, at the junction leading from Gikomba.

A similar incident happened in Embu County where EACC officials arrested the OCS for Itabua Police Station over allegations of demanding Ksh100,000 bribe from owners of a vehicle that was being held at the police station.

In a statement on Sunday August 4, 2024, EACC noted that the OCS identified as Mary Syombua Mutunga had demanded the bribe to facilitate release of the complainants’ motor vehicle impounded and detained at the station.
