“You will clean City Mortuary!” – Geoffrey Mosiria warns men urinating, defecating in Nairobi CBD

Nairobi’s Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, has been making waves in the city’s cleanliness efforts, but his latest discovery has left many Kenyans shocked.

Speaking on TV47’s Dr. Ofweneke Tonight Show, Mosiria revealed the bold measures being taken to keep Nairobi clean—measures that have even included making drunken offenders clean the city mortuary as punishment for lack of following the rules put in place.

According to the Chief Officer, one of the biggest challenges in maintaining a clean city is the infamous habit of some men relieving themselves in town, both short and long calls. Through community engagement, the county has urged wananchi to use public toilets or discreetly walk into hotels and request to use the washrooms. The message was clear—let’s stop turning the streets into open urinals.

Mosiria’s threat is not far-fetched. In August 2024, 30 individuals who were arrested for urinating and littering the streets of Nairobi were sentenced to serve community service at various public facilities, Nairobi Funeral Home (City Mortuary) included.

But what really raised eyebrows was Mosiria’s shocking encounter with food vendors who store their trollies in public toilets! Yes, those same carts that sell smokies, eggs, and samosas to hungry Nairobians on the move. When Mosiria followed up on the unsanitary state of these vendors, he found an even bigger horror—cooking oil being re-used after being disposed of by big restaurants. The sight of giant rats and cockroaches lurking around the food storage areas painted a grim picture of what Kenyans are unknowingly consuming.

To expose the menace, Mosiria recorded a video and exposed it online. Kenyans engaged in the comments section, narrating their personal horror stories. Many confessed to experiencing stomach upsets after consuming street smokies, with some even failing to reach their homes before having to make emergency stopovers.

This shocking revelation raises an urgent food safety concern. How many more Kenyans are unknowingly putting their health at risk? While street food is a beloved part of Nairobi’s culture, Mosiria’s findings serve as a stark reminder: to always be keen on what you consume .
