The Nairobi County Government has issued a notice to matatu owners due to disruptions caused by their activities during city cleaning.
Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria noted that matatu stages remain occupied at night, hindering cleaning efforts.
He also pointed out that some vehicles are not properly maintained, contributing to environmental degradation.
Matatu owners were instructed to ensure their vehicles leave stages during cleaning hours and maintain cleanliness, including subscribing to licensed waste services.
Mosiria also addressed noise issues, urging drivers to stop unnecessary hooting and loud music, and to remove abandoned vehicles immediately.
Those who disregard the guidelines will face legal action.
Additionally, the Chief Officer warned hawkers to remove their wares by 10 p.m. daily to allow for proper cleaning. Items left behind will be considered a nuisance and disposed of without notice.
This directive follows a January 6, 2025 decision to relocate hawkers to specific backstreets, with operations limited to 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays.
However, hawkers have threatened to reject the new rules.
