Nairobi: Marikiti traders protest over planned evictions

Traders at Marikiti market on Thursday September 12, 2024 protested along the streets in Nairobi, rejecting plans to relocate them to Kangundo Market.

Police lobbed teargas to disperse protesting traders along Haile Selassie Avenue, paralyzing transport and activities in the section of the city for some hours.

This is after traders received information that they were going to be locked out of the market on Thursday morning.

As a result, they mobilized themselves and reached the market as early as 4:00 a.m. to guard their property.

They condemned action taken by the Nairobi County government, while burning tires along the busy road leading to Nairobi CBD, thus creating major traffic congestion.

The protest degenerated almost immediately into running battles between traders and police, showing the level of irritation and hate towards the proposed relocation.
