Nairobi: Suspected human traffickers arrested, 56 victims rescued

Detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) have arrested two suspected human traffickers and rescued 56 victims, including 9 minors and 47 adults, in Embakasi, Nairobi.

The operation was carried out by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in collaboration with the Kenyan police.

The suspects, Dakie Jilo (30) and Salat Galgalo (20), were apprehended in the Tasia area of Embakasi Sub-County after a thorough investigation by the law enforcement officers.

The victims were taken to the Embakasi police station for protective custody, while the suspects were transported to the Muthaiga police station for processing pending arraignment.

Meanwhile, authorities urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to assist in curbing this menace.

Human trafficking is a serious issue worldwide, according to the Counter-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2010, “a person who traffics another person, for the purpose of exploitation, commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than thirty years or to a fine of not less than thirty million shillings or to both and upon subsequent conviction, to imprisonment for life.”

The law further states that the consent of the victim is irrelevant if any means of coercion, such as threat, force, or deception, were used.
