The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives have launched investigations after a 23-year-old woman allegedly poisoned her 5-year-old son before attempting suicide in Nairobi’s Hazina estate, South B.
Police reported that the suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition after swallowing a poisonous substance.
The son, aged 5 years was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility, after he was forced to take some poisonous chemical.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman was found struggling in the house after attempting to end her life.
They were both rushed to a hospital during the Tuesday April 1, 2025 incident.
Nairobi police boss George Sedah reported that the mother was transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment.
Police visited the crime scene and collected samples of the products used for the murder and suicide attempt.
The motive of the incident is yet to be known but police have launched investigations into the matter as they wait for the woman to recover before interrogating her.
Meanwhile, police raised concerns about the increased cases of suicides in country and urged citizens to explore amicable dispute resolution mechanisms to avoid similar incidents in future.
