Nakuru Derby headlines as Kenya Cup action resumes this weekend

The battle for the 2024/2025 Kenya Cup title continues this Saturday, January 11, with matchday four action as the league resumes after the festive season break.

At the Nakuru Athletics Club, the much-anticipated Nakuru Derby will see Menengai Oilers visit their neighbors, Nakuru RFC, in their first match of the year, with kickoff set for 4:00 PM.

Last season, Menengai Oilers secured a 19-08 victory at the Nakuru Athletics Club, marking their first-ever away win in a derby.

This will be the eighth Nakuru City Derby showdown, with history favoring the oil men. Out of the last seven encounters, they have won four and lost three. Menengai Oilers, currently sitting third in the Kenya Cup standings with 15 points, will aim to maintain their strong start to the season after winning all three matches played so far. Hosts Nakuru RFC, on the other hand, are seeking positive results from the derby to improve their position in the Kenya Cup standings, as they are placed ninth with zero points after failing to secure a win in their first three matches.

Meanwhile, Kisumu RFC will lock horns with newcomers South Coast Pirates in a match to be played at the Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu. Kisumu RFC will use this match to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of their former chairman and patron, Fidel Odinga, who passed away unexpectedly on January 4, 2015, at the age of 41 in his Karen home.

Ngong Road will be bustling with excitement as the RFUEA Grounds host a thrilling doubleheader. Kenya Harlequins will face Impala Rugby in the renowned Ngong Road derby, while Mwamba Rugby Club will play against KCB Rugby Club.

Other matches will see log leaders Kabras RFC take on varsity side Strathmore Leos, while campus side Blak Blad will battle it out with Nondescripts RFC.

The KRU Championship will also continue this Saturday, January 11, 2025, entering matchday five, with all six matches set to kick off at 3:00 PM.

Log leaders MMUST RFC will welcome JKUAT Cougars at the Masinde Muliro University Grounds. Former Kenya Cup side Homeboyz Rugby will host Mombasa RFC, while TUM Marines will host Mean Machine.

At Zetech University Mang’u Campus, Zetech Oaks will face USIU-A Martials. CUEA Monks will host UOE Trojans, and the last match will feature Daystar Falcons clashing against Western Bulls.
